‘‘A Christmas Carol‘‘ |
‘’A Christmas Carol’’, the best known Charles Dickens’ book, was first published on 19th December 1843, Victorian London. It is a novella about a penny-pinching miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his metamorphose after being visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve. Ebenezer Scrooge is a small businessman. He is really mean, arrogant and has a cynical sense of humour. Scrooge strongly believes that Christmas is just an excuse for people to miss work and for idle to expect handouts. His llife routine changes in the slip when he is visited by his long-dead partner, Jacob Marley. Marley warns Scrooge that if he continues live so selfishly, he will spend eternity wearing the chains that his greed has built. After that three other ghosts visit Scrooge – Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future. Ghosts show his error in valuing money over people. Scrooge is frightened by the bleak picture of his life and promises to change his ways. In the mmorning Ebenezer wakes up as a totally different man. He is a jolly, sensitive and charitable person. He turns into a man he promised the ghost he would become. The moral of the story is that money does not make ppeople happy. Most of them just get obsessed with money, start work hard and do not notice anything else around them. It is a waste of valuable time, because money cannot buy love, peace, health, happiness or freedom, which are the most important in life. There is lots of small things that can make people be pleased. What is more, when person is rich it is hard for him to trust anyone, because most of the people care about material things than a true friendship. So, if you are mean and hard as Scrooge it is the best time to change yourself, while it is not too late. Remember that money is ‘’slippery’’ thing – you can quickly run out oof them. As Charles Dickens said ‘’there is no pockets in shrouds’’, so do not work all days and nights for the reason to earn mountains of cash. It is enough to have money to pay your rent, buy movie ticket and Big Mac meal at McDonalds’ restaurant. Live your life, think twice before you make a decision and enjoy every single minute with your friends and family, because nothing lasts forever |
