INTRODUCTION
ABOUT PAROC
We have almost 50 years’ experience of developing, manufacturing and
distributing stone wool products for use by the building industry and other
industries. We are currently the leading stone wool manufacturer in the
Baltic region, with Sweden and Finland as our main markets. Our annual
turnover is more than 235 million euro.
Paroc has plants in Finland, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania and the United
Kingdom, plus sales companies in fourteen European countries.
Paroc offices are located in Vanda (head office) and Pargas, Finland,
and iin Skövde, Sweden. We employ some 1,700 people.
THE PAROC GROUP
Paroc’s business idea is based on two opposites
The Nordic winters can fairly be described as long and cold, especially
in Finland . About a third of Finland lies within the Arctic Circle. The
lowest temperature recorded in Helsinki, in the southwest of the country,
is –340 C (1987).
The lowest temperature recorded in Finland this century is -50 0 C
(1985 ). These climatic conditions have forced building technology in the
Nordic region tto advance to its world-class position. As an insulation
products manufacturer, Paroc has played an important role in this process
and intends to continue doing so in the future.
The raw material in our products is stone, which we crush, sort and
melt aat approximately 1500 0 C. the melted products is then converted to
stone wool- a material that is superior in providing good insulation, long
durability and maximum fire protection.
A similar manufacturing process can be found in nature. In 1788 a
scientific expedition from the US found a wool- like stone material on the
slopes of the volcano Kilauea on the island of Hawaii. The Hawaiians called
it “the hair of Pele” – Pele being the goddess of the volcano. They said
that when she became angry, she tore her hair and spread it about herself.
What really happened was that the volcano blew steam through the thin
layers of lava, producing a kind of natural stone wool.

PROPERTIES
FIRE SAFETY
Paroc stone wool products are mmade from stone material, and only small
amount of binder is added in the production process.
Paroc stone wool products are classified non-combustible based on the
international standard ISO 1182. They can be used in all types of buildings
without restrictions.
The high melting point makes Paroc an ideal material for the use in the
fire insulation applications. Partitions are designed to restrict the fire
penetration from one fire zone to another. Filling the cavity with Paroc
batts can considerably increase the fire resistance of the partitioning.
Fire iinsulation is also necessary to protect the frame structure, which
carries the loads and prevents the building from collapsing in a fire.
Paroc fire insulation slabs are approved for fire protection of load
bearing steel and concrete structures.
In acoustic linings and applications where the insulation product is
left open it is necessary to fulfill the requirements for ignitability,
spread of flame and smoke generation. Paroc products meet the most
stringent requirements of the surface criteria, which allow them to be used
in all parts of the building including the hallways and the technical
facilities.
RESISTANCE TO WATER AND MOISTURE
Paroc insulation products are intended is used in dry conditions. Stone
fiber is non-hygroscopic and the moisture content of the insulation in
normal service conditions remains below 0,5 % in weight.
During the building and installation process water is often present. To
guarantee the proper functioning of the insulation, Paroc products are
treated with water repellent agent. This allows the products to be used in
normal weather conditions with an exposure to rain.

SOUND REDUCTION
Stone wool is an ideal material for sound absorption and noise
abatement.
By using acoustic slabs in the suspended ceilings the room acoustics
can be improved and the desired acoustic climate created.
Paroc sound insulation slabs are intended be uused in floor structures
for the reduction of the impact noise as well as in the vertical structures
for the reduction of the air bound noise. The impact noise insulation is
based on the principle of creating a floating floor by applying insulation
between the supporting floor structure and the surface structure. It is
important for the impact noise insulation to have the right dynamic
stiffness to achieve the best noise reduction. In vertical structures Paroc
bats and slabs are used as cavity filling to improve the sound reduction of
the partitioning.
MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE
Paroc building insulation products can group into three categories:
flexible mats and bats, semi rigid slabs, and rigid slabs and boards.
Flexible bats are used in framed constructions in which it is important to
provide a good fit.
Semi rigid slabs are intended for applications where the requirement
for the load bearing capacity is in the range of 10 kPa. Rigid insulation
slabs and boards are designed to be used in the most demanding applications
where the load bearing capacity reaches 25 – 70 kPa.
Paroc stone wool keeps its dimensions since changes in temperature or
humidity do not cause expansion or shrinkage. Problems from opening gaps in
the joints causing heat loss do not appear.

APPLICATIONS
INDUSTRY
Industrial applications are one of tthe most important areas for the use of
the Paroc technical insulation products. Applications vary from process
piping and tank wrapping to power plant boilers and smoke flues.
Good insulation is a vital component in safeguarding the energy efficiency
of an industrial process. It is not only the question of lowering the
energy expenditure but also to contribute to the environmental protection
by reducing the emissions of a plant.
RESIDENTIAL
Residential building is by volume the largest segment for the use of
insulation. These buildings vary from a single-family house to town homes
and large developments of apartment buildings. Low energy bill is the wish
for everyone to keep the rents and housing costs at a reasonable level. But
at the same time comfortable and healthy indoor climate is appreciated. By
the use of good insulation both of these wishes can be fulfilled.
MARINE
The requirements of insulating materials for the Marine use are strict. It
is extremely important to use fire safe products for the onboard
applications such as big cruisers, where thousands of passengers are on the
open sea. All products for the Marine applications must be tested and
accepted to be non-combustible and fire proof for their use.
Because of the excellent properties of the Paroc Marine product for
this sector, they are widely used
in all type of vessels.

PRODUCT GROUPS
ROOFS
Roof is the fifth facade of the building. The slope, the supporting
structural system and the finishing material may vary upon the architecture
of the building, but the roofs are always insulated. Paroc offers proven
insulation systems for various types of roof starting from simple loft
insulation to flat roofs in size of a football field.
Paroc has a wide expertise in providing systems that will function
trouble free in the most demanding climatic conditions over tthe years.
Product selection includes rigid slabs and boards for single and double
layer systems, which may be delivered also cut to fall to increase the
slope angle in the retrofit applications.
WALLS
From the insulation point the facades can be differentiated by whether
they are constructed with an air gap for ventilation or compact without a
cavity.
Sandwich types of facades are examples of closed structures. The
traditional concrete sandwich panel is still widely being used although it
has been partly phased out by new systems.
The new systems are typically constructed by applying rendering on top
of the insulation on the building site. These systems can further be
differentiated by the method fixing the insulation and of applying the
rendering. Typical examples of the ventilated facades are the ccurtain wall
type of structures in which glass, metal, natural stone or some sheeting
material is used as exterior lining. Below the exterior lining there is
always an air space on the cold side of the insulation.
-6-
HVAC
The heating ventilation and air conditioning systems in the buildings
are in most cases insulated. Insulation is needed either to keep the
circulating hot water or air warm or to keep the cooling water cold and to
avoid condensation.
In the HVAC applications fire safety is an important criterion when
choosing the insulation. Paroc offers a wide selection of stone wool and
foamed polyethylene bases insulation products for the mechanical systems in
buildings. Product selection includes pipe sections, wired mats, lamella
mats and slabs.
ACOUSTIC
The sound absorption coefficient for stone wwool is close to one, which
means that it is an ideal material for acoustic treatment of rooms. Paroc
acoustic slabs are made from stone wool and faced with a variety of
decorative linings to suit different architectural designs. Slabs are
usually fastened either by gluing to the ceiling or by hanging in a
suspended ceiling grid system which may either be concealed or exposed.
The main applications include decorative ceilings for schools, offices
and public buildings, hygienic ceilings for hospitals, laboratories and
kitchens, and sound absorbing cceilings for industrial facilities.
PANEL SYSTEM
Paroc Panel system is a rational building system used for instance in
industrial buildings, sport facilities, and commercial buildings – wherever
there is a commitment to superior performance.
Paroc Fire Proof Panels are highly advanced composite panels based on a
core material of structural stone wool. Fire ratings, strength, tightness
and thermal insulation are among the unique performance characteristics
when employed as external wall cladding, internal walls and ceilings.
The system is an economical application within the facade, hygiene,
fire and acoustical segment. The idea behind the system was to create a
rational product to match the demands of modern building: appearance, short
construction time, excellent fire safety, energy saving, a high degree of
flexibility, and good overall economy.
-7-
PROCESS
Industrial processes are consumers of large quantities of energy. To
function optimally and to be efficient in the use the process equipment
need to be well insulated. In many cases insulation is also necessary for
the personal safety of the workers against the hot surfaces that they might
come in contact with. In processes that operate below the ambient
temperature insulation is needed against condensation.
For normal process applications the maximum service temperature of the
Paroc technical insulation products is 750 C but Paroc offers also a
special product for hhigh temperature applications, in which the maximum
service temperature is 900 C.
MARINE
The most important reason to insulate onboard is to save lives in case
of fire. It is also vital to arrange good working conditions for the staff
and an enjoyable environment to all passengers provided by the thermal and
acoustic insulating products. Paroc Marine insulation offers the most
sophisticated products and solutions to establish the passive fire
protection and the comfort insulation easy and effectively for the ships.
